Homework is an important part of your child’s school experience. Supporting good work habits requires a joint effort. I will support your child and encourage good work habits at school. Your child will benefit greatly from your support and encouragement at home.
The purpose of homework is to provide practice at skills that have been learned in class. A homework pack will be sent home each Monday. As a general rule, homework should take 10-20 minutes, with an additional 10-20 minutes for reading. Please avoid going ahead of the schedule attached to the front of the pack, as that schedule is created based on when the lessons are taught in class. If you go ahead of the schedule, your child may be working on skills that have not been taught yet, thus defeating the purpose of the assignment. Completed homework packets, including the reading log and spelling activities, are due the following Monday. Any work not completed in the student's handwriting will not be accepted.
Students who do not turn in their homework will miss recess for the week until it is turned in.
Homework Grades - Each week, 2 random pages of the homework packet will be chosen to be formally graded. The graded activity is randomly selected, so not completing the entire homework pack may result in a zero.
Projects - Classroom projects may be sent home in addition to the homework packets. Anticipated projects include the Past & Present Poster board, Cereal Box Book Report, the Wild Animal Project, and the Black History Project. These projects are worth multiple grades, so their completion is very important. Project directions, as well as grading rubrics, will be sent home at least one week before the project is due.
